Speakers:

Cécile Clercx graduated from the University of Liège, Belgium in 1983 and joined the department of Clinical Science of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, section Companion Animal Internal Medicine where she is now Professor and Head of the Companion Animal Clinic. She defended her PhD thesis at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1983. Since 1995, she is diplomate of the European college of Veterinary Internal Medicine, for which she has been a Board member (executive secretary) from 1998 to 2002 and is a member of the education committee since 2007.

Her main interests include upper and lower respiratory tract diseases in dogs and cats, with special emphasis on aspergillosis, eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy and interstitial diseases (such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in terrier dogs), lung function testing, and bronchial diseases in cats . She is the author of  numerous presentations and communications in international congresses, as well as scientific publications in journals and in books on this topic.

The research group Lung Insight features PhD students Marika Melamies, Henna Heikkilä, Liisa Lilja.Maula and Sanna Viitanen will represent their results of canine IPF and infectious lung diseases. The Lung Insight Group was formed 2006 by Minna Rajamäki. Melamies was the first PhD student starting her PhD project of canine inhalation medications. Henna Heikkilä and Liisa Lilja-Maula share the same research topic, canine idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.  Sanna Viitanen has recently started in her project involving infectious lung diseases and acute phase proteins. The group has published several international articles also in collaboration with other veterinary pulmonologists.

Katri Koli defended her PhD thesis at the University of Helsinki, Finland in 1995. She did a two year post-doctoral training with professor Carlos Arteaga at the Vanderbilt Cancer Center, Nashville, TN. Since her return to Finland she has been working in the Medical Faculty of the University of Helsinki. She was appointed adjunct professor 2001. Currently she is a Principal Investigator at the Research Programs Unit / Molecular Cancer Biology of the University of Helsinki.

Her research is directed towards understanding how growth factors in the extracellular environment regulate growth and differentiation. In particular, the targeting and activation of the TGF-β/BMP family growth factors and their role in normal functions as well as in the pathogenesis of diseases such as fibrosis and cancer, is of interest. In her research she analyzes human tissue biopsies, uses in vitro cell culture and in vivo experimental mouse models as well as high throughput technologies.

Emilie Krafft graduated from the faculty of veterinary medicine, Lyon, France in 2007. After two years of internship in this school, she started a PhD in the University of Liege in 2009. Her research topic is canine idiopathic fibrosis and she is working under the supervision of Pr Cécile Clercx.

Pernilla Syrjä graduated as a veterinarian 1999 for the School of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover Germany. After a mixture of practical veterinary work, maternity leaves and assistant positions in veterinary pathology, she 2004 formally registered as a trainee in veterinary pathology at the Univeristy of Helsinki and was board certified by the ECVP in 2008. Since 2009 Pernilla has been responsible for the diagnostic service in veterinary pathology at Helsinki University, setting up a formal residency training in Helsinki. She is an active member of the Nordic Society of Veterinary Pathology since 2001, its acting president during 2011. Pernilla has been involved as local organizer for the ESVP/ECVP Summer school in 2006 and 2007 and in 2011-12 she served as proctor in the examination commity for the 2012 ECVP Board exam. Pernillas professional interests lie in diagnostic pathology and cytology, where they support clinical research and clinical veterinary medicine.

Marjukka Myllärniemi is a pulmonary physician involved in IPF research at the University of Helsinki. She is currently engaged in a researcher position at the Academy of Finland. She is responsible for the national IPF registry in Finland, and is also in charge of preclinical drug testing in mouse models in her research group. MM has graduaded in 1997, got her PhD in vascular biology in 1999, the clinical speciality in 2005, and Adjunct Professorship in 2008. Read more at: www.lungfactor.fi
